4.5/5

“After all, everyone was mortal until they weren’t.”

As Victor Vale hunts for a way to cure the power that is killing him, EON lives on through the new tainted hands of Gabriel Gray who is determined to control the ExtraOrdinary’s. Elsewhere Mitch and Sydney struggle to lead a normal life as whispers of their past haunt their every move.

It all comes to ahead in the final book in V.E Schwab’s Villains series, a book that has been thirteen years in the making and, as expected, it’s as maliciously marvelous as you would expect.

If there is one thing that can be said about V.E Schwab’s writing, it’s that she thrives when it comes to creating complex and intriguing characters that feel both uncomfortably real and admiringly original.

Both Victor Vale and Eli Ever feel familiar in so many ways and mystifying in others, even the likes of Sydney Clarke and June had me gasping in bewilderment at the decisions before nodding along to their choices.

As far as final books go, Schwab delivered a heartbreaking and action-packed finale that had me on the edge of my seat from the first page. When you lead character is, in fact a villain, nothing is off the table when it comes to brutality and breaking the rules.

Schwab also delivers on creating heart-warming and unforgettable relationships and what’s more is that there are all platonic. In fact, there is little to no romance in the entire trilogy – no mean feat for a fantasy book, let alone a series with a wide range of characters to pick from.

Found family, friends to enemies and revenge plot are just some of the tropes featured in Victorious and they are produced masterfully. The constant time jumps throughout border on disorientating but it isn’t enough to distract you from the powerful plot.

Victorious is a wicked, witty and woeful end to a series thirteen years in the making and there is no denying, it was most certainly worth the wait.
