4.5/5

“I steal through empty hallways, ears pricked for the slightest sounds – hushed voices emanating from any of the opulent chambers, a clandestine setting of traitors Eyes.”

Following her victory at the elemental trials, Blaze is now queen but before she can claim her crown she ventures into the Wildlands to hunt for the Eye of the Soul. With her brother Flint at her side and the treacherous King Balen on her tail, Blaze finds an unlikely alliance in the form of a certain earth adoring troublemaker.

Tides of Fortune is a spectacular sequel to Heir of Storms and Hamilton Murray has created a rich and inviting realm with strong storytelling and even stronger characters.

The author made the decision to tell the sequel from three different perspectives and it works perfectly. We still hear the conflicted thoughts of Rain Singer Blaze, but we also jump into the mind of her brazen and bold brother, Flint, who offers a hilarious yet heartbreaking commentary, as well as the meek and magicked serf, Elva, who is torn between love and loyalty.

As a lead Blaze is up their with the greats; she’s smart and sarcastic without being nasty and a know-it-all, she is self-deprecating enough that’s she is relatable without falling into the dreaded ‘Pick Me,’ category. As for Fox Castellion, a character who puts the life of animals before anything else is always going to win (and break) a few hearts.

You could say that the characters are where the story thrives but the arcane within the Storm Weaver world is layered and intriguing without being complicated or overworked. Not forgetting the imagery created around the physical world that is both vivid and authentic- it’s almost enough to ignore the unimaginative character names.

Tides of Fortune is pure YA fantasy that is brimming with sorcery, suspense and many, MANY moments of subterfuge, what more could you ask for?

Oh, how about a cute pet fox named Scout? You’re welcome.
