I am not ashamed to admit that I am one of those people who spends a potentially unhealthy amount of time on Pinterest looking for inspiration around, well, everything. Whether it’s a summer holiday I haven’t booked yet, a bedroom I’m not updating anytime soon or my new A/W style, there is something about curating a vision board that I relish.
Without a doubt one of my favourite past times is to build a wardrobe aesthetic; whether it’s for an upcoming event or a change in seasons, I love to curate ideas and outfits and often turn to on-screen fictional characters for inspiration.

Dionne Davenport, Clueless
Naturally, everybody raves about the closet belonging to Cher Horowitz – after all she is the main character and that yellow plaid co-ord is an iconic outfit – but I always resonated more with Dionne. She has just a little more edge to her outfits and the combination of black with hot pinks, neon green and red is a dream. Not to mention she accessorizes like a pro.
Satine, Moulin Rouge
The most devastating dazzling ode to Eurydice, Nicole Kidman as Satine in Moulin Rouge offers up some truly magical costumes. There is so much storytelling in the Moulin Rouge wardrobe and with Satine the luxurious fabrics and detailing speak volumes.
Nancy Downs, The Craft
Nancy Downs really was that witch, her grunge infused nineties outfits are still fabulous today, and I just love those red-tinted glasses and the vinyl Mac.
Courtney Shayne, Jawbreaker
Before Mean Girls, we had Jawbreaker and Rose McGowan’s deliciously evil Courtney Shayne is a style goddess. The nineties comedy horror is brimming with show stopping outfits from all of the stars, but Courtney and her monochrome ensembles is a stand out for me.
Arwen Undómiel, The Lord of the Rings
I’m a fantasy girlie at heart, what can I say? Arwen’s costume throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy is pure magic. I remember being desperate for a flared sleeve dress when I was younger and by younger I mean now.
Gale Weathers, Scream movies
Can you tell I have thing for nineties and noughties fashion? Special mention goes to Tatum in Scream, as I love her wardrobe too but she only has two outfits before she’s trapped in that god damn garage door. Plus, there’s something about Gale and her iconic suits that I just adore.
The Coyotes, Coyote Ugly
I couldn’t pick just one of the Coyote’s as my favourite because they all have iconic outfits at some point throughout the movie. I also love how although they have similar silhouettes the colors, prints and fabrics are contrasting. Rachel is often in dark colors and leather, Cammie wears pinks and leopard print and Lil loves a slogan tank top. Plus, as far as movie wardrobes go, the Coyote Ugly girls is probably one of the most achievable.
Nakia, Black Panther
I remember being in awe when I first watched Black Panther because Nakia’s costumes are next level stunning. The colors and motifs are breathtaking and the history behind each on-screen outfit is exactly what each film needs – there is a reason it’s an OSCAR winning wardrobe.
Penny Lane, Almost Famous
I have never been one for seventies fashion but Kate Hudson as Penny Lane it too fabulous to ignore, the fact that the Afghan coat is often referred to as the Penny Lane coat, explains just how much of an impact this character had on fashion.
Elena Monterro, The Mask of Zorro
Catherine Zeta Jones in this movie is every whimsical warrior’s fantasy, it’s on my list of fancy dress ideas because who wouldn’t want to feel like Elena Monterro for a day?
The combination of the corsets and bodices with the ruffles and puff sleeves is equal parts dramatic and dreamy, plus the colour ways chosen for CZJ are delectable and a perfect example of colour theory.
Foxy Brown, Foxy Brown
Pam Grier in Foxy Brown is formidable, we’re all seeing her in that red jumpsuit, right?

Elle Woods, Legally Blonde
Every moment of Legally Blonde is a catwalk and obviously Elle Woods is the main model but all the characters shine in their own right. Sophie De Rakoff is the brains behind the pink closet and I would love to sit down and hear all about her ideas behind Elle’s perfect Barbie ensembles.

Elaine, The Love Witch
Another horror comedy with stellar outfits, it’s not just Elaine in The Love Witch’s wardrobe that makes her aesthetic shine but that bewitching icy blue eyeshadow. Although it’s set in modern day, the way the movie is filmed and Elaine’s vintage inspired outfits give it a whimsy, moody vibe.
