Monique Grant is a fresh new journalist who is selected by Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo to write her memoir. A no hold barred tell all where the notorious superstar will reveal every secret and story; including the details of her seven marriages.Β
An intoxicating read, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is an unpredictable and intriguing book; much like the character it is based upon. The breakdown of the husbands as chapter headings is an original and fitting way to build a timeline and serves as a teaser of what is to come.
The majority of the novel is a series of flashbacks to the iconic golden era of Hollywood and as the reader you canβt help but feeling part of Evelynβs whirlwind adventure. The way it is written and the atmosphere created means you often forget Evelyn isnβt the narrator of the story; this is where the book struggles. Moniqueβs role is ultimately a mechanism for the plot and you fail to connect with her and I found myself wanted to skip her inner monologue.
Nevertheless The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a compelling and ruthless story of love, lust and loneliness with a twist
