Kiva is the healer at Zalindov prison and has been since her father, who previously held the title, died a few years ago. When the rebel queen arrives at the prison, unconscious, it’s up to Kiva to keep her alive.

Kiva is a refreshing lead; a little reserved yet smart and astute. All the characters stand out as original and you are introduced to a fair amount without being overpowered by names and titles.
You know the book is well written when it stays in one location but keeps you constantly gripped. You don’t ever leave Zalindov (unless you count the minimal flashbacks) but with this level of drama there is no need to.
The magic system doesn’t feel the main focus of the novel and that is a strength of the book. It is very much a character driven series and the plot itself would work with or without the supernatural element. (But as a lover of fantasy it’s accepted with open arms.)
Some parts that were supposed to be a surprise bordered on predictable but for the most part there was a shocking revelation on every page.
The romance is the slowest of burns and although it felt a little stretched out it’s a sweet love that eventually blossoms. The Prison Healer isn’t an action-packed book but the torture, magical trials and battles within Zalindov are a well-timed change of pace amongst the multiple story lines.
