“Witching and women’s rights. Suffrage and spells. They’re both a kind of power, aren’t they? The kind we aren’t allowed to have.”
It’s 1893 in New Salem and witchcraft has nearly been burned away. But a simmer of magic still hovers over the city.
Three estranged sisters – the wild one James Juniper, the strong one Agnes Amaranth and the wise one Beatrice Belladonna – find themselves at the forefront of the women’s suffrage movement. But as women’s rights turn into the witches rights the three Eastwood Sisters become embroiled in a political and devastating battle none of them were prepared for.

From a societal point of view it’s a look at the suffering of women whatever the era and the inequality they face on a daily basis. But at the same time it demonstrates the power females possess and the potential when they ban together and fight for a cause.
Myths and fairytales are intertwined with true events and history is warped and twisted to make the story come alive. Harrow also adds spells at the start of the chapters, this is both inviting and foreboding and had me itching to write my own grimoire.
Heart breaking and devastatingly honest, with The Once and Future Witches, Harrow delivered an enchanting, exquisite and educational novel that tackles countless crippling truths without preaching.
This is a must read for everybody of every era and will go down in history as a lesson to be learned and a truth to be exposed.
