Malibu Rising is an honest and addictive novel that is as cool as the characters it features with enough hard-hitting truths to make it relatable.Β
Not as devastating as The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo but certainly as candid Malibu Rising manages to balance California dreaming with harsh realities of a broken home, self-sacrifice and abandonment. Although the focus is on Nina you are welcomed with third person views from all the siblings as well as flashbacks from their parents and excited monologues from the party attendees.
The Santa Monica Mountains and their notorious forest fires work as both an enticing location as well as a metaphor of what the novel will feature; explosions, devastation and the odd cliche.
For all the heartbreak and bitter truths of life in the limelight Taylor Jenkins Reid latest novel is flooded with love, honesty and importance of family; both blood and found.Β
Malibu Rising is the perfect summer read that’ll make you want to grab a surfboard and be part of the Riva family; all year round.
