With House of Earth and Blood it could almost have been read as a stand alone; an urban fantasy crime thriller dripping with humour and drama. But as we delve back in Lunathion it becomes clear that the world Maas created within Crescent City is so much more than we could have ever imagined.

Bryce Quinlan still shines as the lead, she is one of those rare protagonists who is naturally funny; a trait often left for the supporting cast. But with Bryce, Maas has created a smart, sarcastic female who is equal parts sassy as she is compassionate.
Both Hunt and Ruhn thrive alongside our brilliant Bryce and the dynamic between the two lovers is hilarious and heart-warming with Ruhn acting as the protective, loyal older brother.
Many characters who are barely seen within the first novel play a much more pivotal role within the second book and Maas does well to balance each storyline and every blossoming romance.
The smut is steamier and we don’t just see Bryce and Hunt becoming intimate but also a few other magical beings getting down and dirty too.
Once again the world building is heavy and whereas House of Earth and Blood offered a great deal of introductions House of Sky and Breath is about exploring the realm of Midgard and what lies beyond Lunathion. It works wonderfully as a way to introduce more characters but if you struggle with dense fantasy worlds be prepared to work for the story.
House of Sky and Breath doesn’t have as much heart as its predecessor. The friendship between Bryce and Danika carried a great deal of weight and although the Bryce/Hunt or Bryce/Ruhn relationship is a magical one there was something touching about the female bond.
The novel is brimming with action and the last few chapters in particular are fueled with nail-biting combat that ends with a cataclysmic cliffhanger.
Deeper, dirtier and devastatingly more dark, House of Sky and Breath upped the ante in a way none of us saw coming.
